walkabout

A spontaneous journey through the wilderness of one’s choosing in an effort to satisfy one’s itchy feet, a need to be elsewhere, the craving for the open road, that space over the horizon…  – Urban Dictionary

Our Window…

My wife and I began traveling full time in January of 2015.  She had been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy a few years before and was just beginning to notice troubling indicators, and as the disease progress seems to vary wildly by person there’s really not a definitive way to know where she might be in 2, 5 or 10 years.  It was a decision point.  A life moment.  Continue doing the same ol’ same ol’, or break out and aim for something new, better and bigger before those things were no longer in the cards for her.  We chose bigger.

And so we traveled, happily, joyously, until late in 2017 she developed an illness that kept her in ICU and intubated for a full  month, and although she recovered enough to leave the hospital and return to be near her family and friends for a little longer, she was not able to fully recover and passed away in March of 2018.

Our window was nowhere near as long as we wanted…  but we loved it and I wish more than anything that we were still at it.  I miss her a lot.
