Old and busted…

Automatic resetting circuit breakers are a thing, and I have, (at least) two of them.  The reason I know this is that one, (or both) started getting hinky on me when I was using my leveling jack stands.  When they were really working hard, raising the front end up, I’d hear a pop, the control panel would go dark, and everything was off.  After a few moments, there’d be another pop, and the control panel would come back on with an error message.  I’d be able to clear the message, and to continue using the control panel and stands, usually in short bursts, (to avoid another pop) until I was level.   A little consultation with an RV repair guru at a place close by, and lot’s of google-fu, and it wasn’t really that hard to make the switch to new breakers.

New hotness!!

The trickiest parts were actually finding out where the old breakers lived, and the accessibility, as they were a bit behind my battery box in the front compartment with the smallest access door.  So I spent the better part of 40 minutes all in with my head and shoulders stuck inside a 2×3 hatch door. (I replaced both, not knowing if it was only one or the other, I already had my head in the hatch, and they were less then $5 each.)  40 minutes because I had to do one of the breakers twice. The sneaky little rat turned out to be a 50amp breaker when I’d picked up two 40amps.   I went ahead and put the 40amp in the first time since it was late, the breaker place was closed for the day and I wanted to turn all the power back on.  But I revisited the breaker place the next day for the correct 50amp breaker, shut down all the power, again, and spent my final time with my head in the hatch with a flashlight in my mouth. (Yes, I have a headlamp, no I didn’t use it, no, there was no good angle to rest the flashlight on something while pointed in the right direction, and yes, I’m irritatingly stubborn at times)  In the end, I made it all good, and 35-40 minutes was easy peasy.

The next project is going to be the beast, I think.  I’ll be upgrading to lithium-ion batteries and a new, intelligent charge controller that supports lithium batteries.  (most standard ones don’t)  Challenge accepted!!
